First of all I want to say thanks to Debbie for organizing our posts each week for the Farm to Philly OLS blog. I had a lot of fun participating in my first challenge online. I got to experiment with different vegetables and learned a lot about my local farms, CSAs, markets, and community. I want to join a CSA as soon as possible and get more involved in growing my own garden. I am proud to have eaten my own tomatoes from my garden this summer and tomorrow we'll be grilling the first zucchini! I'll be posting a garden update soon.
Last week, the first place we visited was Kentucky, while there we tried some special treats. For breakfast one morning, we visited a diner in Campbellsville (I think it was the only one there) that offered local products in their meals. It was like stepping into Grandma's kitchen and the farm was in the back yard. We had eggs, tators, biscuits and gravy, and country ham. I had never tried country ham and probably will never have it again. The waitress said they salt and brine them right there in town, well, apparently country ham is cured in salt. It tasted to me like what a pig smells like - yuck! Hubby's dad said it is a special treat to get this type of ham and very expensive due to the amount of time it takes to prepare it.
While in Louisville, we went to Cumberland Brews in the highlands, which had local fried green tomatoes from the Chef's garden, we also tasted their freshly brewed IPA and wheat beers.
After Lousiville we went north to Nashville, IN in Brown County. We walked around the artisit's community on which they had a tasting room for the Brown County Winery. We tasted most of the wines, which I found to be very sweet (even the 'dry' ones) and very airy. It must be the climate and earth on which the grapes grow. We ended up buying the Seyval Blanc and the Vista Rose. We then tried ice cream at Miller's which was highly recommended by the visitor's center. They use local cream and make it right there in the store!
After Brown County we travelled up to Indianapolis to stay with my sister for three nights. One of the nights there we ate at Broad Ripple Brew Pub. We had dinner there, I tried their braunschweiger BLT, which I don't think was local, however we did try their local brews. Dan had an IPA and I tried the wheat, very tasty.
I would like to give a shout out to some restaurants that hubby and I always try when we visit KY and IN and a new one we tried in MO. I know they probably don't use local products, but when we visit the midwest these are our must eats!
Rally's was our first special treat, unfortunately, I didn't get a picture. This is Dan's absolute favorite burger joint.
Here's to White Castle! They have breakfast now, so we stopped for a morning treat, plus a couple of sliders.
Ode to Dunkin Donuts! We can now get the coffee in the stores here in CO, but it's not the same without the yummy donuts. Bad picture of me, we had just finished moving and needed a treat.
Cheers to Steak 'N Shake! I miss it, but thank god there's nothing like this in CO, I'd be in there everyday. I had my favorite Frisco Melt.
Last, but not least, we happened to find the original Arthur Bryant's in Kansas City, MO. They serve their famous Kansas City BBQ. Dan and I shared a pulled pork sandwich and cole slaw because it was the size of my head. It's so cool that we accidently stumbled across the original. There are pictures inside of the famous people that have gone there for the BBQ - Jimmy Carter, Steven Spielberg, Mohommad Ali, John Lithgow and many others. It's in a really bad part of town, the little place had a cop inside and security outside, despite the precarious neighborhood, the line was almost out the door. Delicious! I have NEVER tasted BBQ like that before.
